A LATE 19TH/ EARLY 20TH ATHENIENNE FORM BRONZE STAND

351: A LATE 19TH/ EARLY 20TH ATHENIENNE FORM BRONZE STAND

The Italian bronze Athenienne form jardinière stand with circular top portion adorned in applied bronze bull heads and swags is raised on a tripod-form comprised of three outward-facing winged sphinxes atop cabriole legs and paw feet joined by a common base. The design is cast after an unearthed Pompeian brazier from antiquity.
Measures 36 x 22 x 22 inches.
Very good condition, noting the effects of age and exposure to the elements.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
