A RARE WINNEBAGO CARVED WOOD PEYOTE TALKING STICK

26: A RARE WINNEBAGO CARVED WOOD PEYOTE TALKING STICK

This is identified by the current owner as a peyote talking stick carved by Winnebago Indian Frank Storm ( - 1970) and used in Native church services. The seller's notes state that the piece was purchased at Parson's Trading Post in the Wisconsin Dells August 5, 1980.

The carving from unidentified wood retains much of its stain and displays highlights around the cross atop an openwork steeple with mystery ball over a crosshatched section and arrowhead-like point.
Measures 39.25 inches.
Very good original condition, there are no issues of damage or repair.
Provenance: The 40 year collection of Father Tom Wiederholt, Kansas City, Missouri. Tom was a close personal friend of scholar and curator Ralph 'Ted' Coe who advised Tom on most of his acquisitions.
