AN ATYPICAL ZUNI POTTERY BASKET WITH HEARTLINE SERPENT

31: AN ATYPICAL ZUNI POTTERY BASKET WITH HEARTLINE SERPENT

The unusual form of a Zuni Pueblo pottery basket with handle and stepped outline top edge is decorated in brown slip motifs of tadpoles, dragonflies and two snakes or Avanyu serpents with red heartline.

Most common in Zuni pottery are pots and bowls, no example of a basket could be found, and the decoration of a heartline serpent is also very uncommon.
Measures 5.25 x 7.25 inches.
The handle displays fractures or joints at the rim where it joins the lower portion and there are some areas of repaint along the rim.
