A FINE ANTIQUE NORTHEAST CAUCASUS KUBA RUNNER RUG

118: A FINE ANTIQUE NORTHEAST CAUCASUS KUBA RUNNER RUG

The boldly woven carpet has a blue field with allover design comprising off-set rows of elaborate polychrome flower heads in blue, red, saffron and ivory framed within a pale blue kufic border and linked carnation outer borders. This is a nice example of the finer antique Kuba rugs in warm antique colors displaying designs that include the additional feature of a star-filled rhombus within each flower head. The border design is the type also seen in the finer examples from this region.
Measures 144 x 38 inches.
Nice intact original sides and ends, noting a gouge to the macrame on one end and 3/4 loss to macrame on the other end. The sides are intact, but devoid of wrap. Even low pile overall to the foundation in limited areas, visually good coverage. Some corroded browns. No damage, repair, mothing, stain or odor.
Provenance: Phil Martin Estate. Phil's interest in Persian and Caucasian weavings began in the 1980's when he met Michael Grogan, who was still with Sotheby's at the time.
