FINE AND RARE SPODE ADMIRAL NELSON ICE PAIL PR C. 1810

216: FINE AND RARE SPODE ADMIRAL NELSON ICE PAIL PR C. 1810

The exceptional bone china pair in Lady Stafford shape and Admiral Nelson decoration are finely rendered in Imari-influenced designs of cobalt blue, iron red, and gold embellishment. Each 'glacier ' or ice pail in three sections, is signed in red and numbered 2597 on every one of the three pieces that comprise each cooler. The 1955 paper label of Waldhorn Co., presumably the famous antique shop in New Orleans since 1881, is on the base of one.

Ice Pails, Ice Cream Pails, Fruit Coolers, whatever these were used for, only the wealthiest of citizens had any need for a pair. The resources necessary to keep a consistent supply of ice in the kitchen were such that the vast majority of citizens had no use for this piece-type, making nice examples very rare.
Each measures 12 x 10 x 8 inches.
Very good condition. There are two small chips on the underside rim of the cover to one and a long large chip to the underside rim of the other cover. Neither show with the cover in place. There is noticeable gold wear to the rim of the bowl shaped liners, approximately 20% of the gold is worn away, 80% present. There are no other no chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
Provenance: A prominent Kansas City family's home at The Walnuts.
