THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

36: THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)
Self-Portrait (1972)
The lithograph published by Associated American Artists in an edition of 300 prints on Rives watermarked paper is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and listed as Fath catalog number 84. Printed on Rives watermarked paper.

Benton's comments in Fath read: This is a study, from the mirror image of an old artist, 'grandaddy Benton' as all the kids call me. I had a belly when I did it but after building a stone retaining wall, 65 feet long and in some places 10 feet high, on our place in Martha's Vinyard, I got rid of it. It hasn't come back.
Image measures 19.5 x 13.75, sheet is 24.75 x 18.5 inches.
Very good condition, the full untrimmed sheet with four deckle edges, not laid down, no damage, punctures, tears or repair; a faint mat burn surrounds the image, tape residue on the upper edge as shown, presents very well framed and matted.
Provenance: Private collection, Des Moines, Iowa.
