THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

20: THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)
The Race (Homeward Bound) (1942)
The rare and desirable Thomas Hart Benton lithograph printed by Associated American Artists on wove paper in an edition of 250 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left, a fine, strong, dark impression with iconic steam locomotive at full throttle. This is a nice, dark impression.

Benton's comments in Fath regarding this image read: 'Common enough scene in the days of the steam engine. Why did horses so often run with the steam trains while they now pay no attention to the Diesels? Study for a painting made in the early '40s, later turned over to A.A.A.'
Image measures 9 x 13, sheet is 13.5 x 17.5, and frame is 20.5 x 24 inches.
Very good condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, four intact deckle edges, the deckle are has irregularities that, in the images, may appear as divots or losses but are not. There are no issues of o damage, punctures, tears or repair. The right margin and lower margin are very lightly toned at the edge of the sheet, there is a spot of foxing lower margin center closer to the sheet edge. Shows excellent in the frame and mat,
