THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

30: THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)
Down the River (1939)
The lithograph circulated by Associated American Artists in an edition of 250 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and listed as Fath catalog number 33. A dark impression.

Benton's comments in Fath read: A scene on the White River in The Ozarks. Drawings for it were made in August 1939 while on a float trip down the river. The area presented is now under seventy five feat of water, due to the construction of Bull Shoals dam. However, such scenes are still common in the clear water Ozark rivers which remain free flowing. Twice yearly, Spring and Autumn, I have floated those rivers from many years, fishing, camping out on the sand and gravel bars and just watching the river banks go by. The boy in the picture is my son T.P. Benton. Also called 'The Young Fisherman.'
Image measures 12.25 x 9.75 with a framed size of 21.25 x 18.25 inches.
Very good to fine condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair; framed to archival standards in acid free mounts.
