5466: NAPOLEON: 'FROM A SKETCH TAKEN IN 1836 BY LT. COL WARD'

The lot of two images related to Napoleon are offered with a small 19th century oil painting:

1. A graphite sketch on paper with watercolor highlights inscribed as follows below the image in pencil: Napoleon's Tomb at St. Helena From a Sketch taken in 1836._ By Lt. Colonel Ward. No evidence could be found confirming the authorship of this original work on paper from the 19th century.

A member of the 66th Regiment identified as (Lt. Colonel) Ward (1798-1878) was a guard at Longwood while Napoleon Bonaparte was held on the British island of Saint Helena . It is known that Ward drafted a sketch of Napoleon on his death bed and later drafted numerous other sketches based on that original composition. Ward is listed in A ST. HELENA Who's Who by Arnold Chaplin, credited with being one of only two British officers known to have been present at both Napoleon's funeral in 1821 and the exhumation in 1840. Lt. Col. Ward was also known to have made multiple copies of his own sketches, perhaps accounting for the wording, 'From a Sketch taken in 1836...'

2. A reverse painting on glass depicting French officers and ladies in an interior welcoming the Emperor.

3. A small oil on canvas signed H. N. Carmer lower right.
Measure from 6.5 x 8 to 9.5 x 10 inches. Napoleon's Tomb 6.5 x 8 inches overall.
Very good condition, noting some soiling and discoloration, a small area of lifting on the surface of the painting.
