414: A LATE 19C. CHINESE EXPORT HAND FAN WITH APPLIED FACES

The very fine example constructed from sixteen elaborately pierce-carved sticks and guards stained in red is mounted with an accordion leaf painted on each side and further embellished with finely painted and applied faces on each of the many figures throughout the compositions each side. A fitted case with hand painted paper applications on satin is included.
The fan measures 10.75 x 20 inches.
Very good condition, noting scattered paper tears and splits as shown. There are no breaks or repairs.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
