THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) LITHOGRAPH

59: THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) LITHOGRAPH

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)
Ploughing it Under (1934)
The lithograph typically found published by Associated American Artists and signed by the artist in pencil below the image is not signed in pencil. There is a signature within the plate. The print is a nice, strong impression on Rives watermarked paper and is exact in every way, including dimensions, print process, paper quality etcetera, though the work is not signed in pencil, see Fath number 8. This could be due to the sheet defect. See the condition report.

Benton's comments in Fath read: Drawing made in South Carolina in 1934 - showing Tugwell's program in operation.
Image measures 8 x 13.5 on a 11.5 x 16 inch sheet with an overall frame size of 16.5 x 22 inches.
Good condition, noting the upper right corner is incomplete - probably an original flaw in the manufacturing process rather than damage, given the entire outside edge of the area of concern has the same deckle edge finish as all other edges of the sheet. The sheet is not laid down and there are no issues of damage or repair, the image field displays light to moderate toning to an even cream color.
