A GRAND TOUR CARVED MARBLE BUST: PSYCHE OF CAPUA

334: A GRAND TOUR CARVED MARBLE BUST: PSYCHE OF CAPUA

(Third quarter of the 19th Century.)
The finely sculpted 19th century Italian Carrera marble bust is after a model from the 1st century B.C. found in the amphitheater of Capua in Italy during the 18th century.

Additional research leads some to believe the original may have been a depiction of Aphrodite of Knidos rather than the long held attribution of Psyche.
Measures 21 x 14.5 x 13 inches.
Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or heavy wear.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
