436: AN ARTICULATED FISH JUDAICA SPICE BOX WITH GARNETS

The flexible, articulated, hand-made figure of a fish fitted with nineteen garnet cabochon stones has overlapping rows of scales engraved in detail, along with scrolling, substantial, hand engraved fins and tail, a hinged head that opens to an internal container with unidentified stamped hallmarks. The work in .800 silver dates to the late 19th century.
Measures 1.5 x 5 x 1.25 inches. Total weight of 1.3 ozt.
Good condition.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
