The massive oval sterling silver tray with bearded male masks on 'C' scroll handles joining a very elaborate cast and openwork border pierce cast with with grapevines, shells, snails and insects profusely chased and stippled in hand engraved detail throughout the shaped surround interrupted by classical Bacchanalian heads over satyr masks. The slightly dished center is engraved BIRD, family surname of partners in KC's most famous department store: Emery, Bird, Thayer, established around 1890. The reverse is stamped with hallmarks for John Bodman Carrington, London, 1905, and with stamp of Carrington and Co, 130 Regent St, London.
Measures 31 x 21 inches, weighs 196.12 ozt.
Very good condition throughout, there are no issues of damage, repair, scratches, dents or heavy wear. Each side is engraved with the family name Bird as shown.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
