NORWEGIAN SILVER PLIQUE A JOUR FOOTED CUP SAUCER SETS

432: NORWEGIAN SILVER PLIQUE A JOUR FOOTED CUP SAUCER SETS

The Norwegian silver sets are built by hand in elaborate openwork floral motifs and decorative bands sculpted from silver stock and filled with jewel-tone glass enamels in the technique plique a jour - French for 'letting in daylight.' The circular solid silver base of each cup and each saucer is embellished in blue, and or red, guilloche enamel on the inside and stamped with the maker's hallmark for Marius Hammer and the Norwegian silver standard stamp of 930s, greater than that of Sterling silver.
Red sauce measures 4.25, cup is 2 x 3 x 2.5, blue saucer is 4, and the cup is 2 x 3 x 2.5 inches.
The saucer with red guilloche center is with crazing and minor bits of actual loss, plus the cup is separated from its 'foot' as shown. There are no other issues of damage or repair.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
