THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHO

23: THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHO

Thomas Hart Benton (Missouri, 1889-1975)
Self-Portrait (1972)
The lithograph printed on B F K Rives paper from an edition of 300 prints published by Associated American Artists is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right, Fath number 84.

In Creekmore Fath's catalog, Benton writes, This is a study, from the mirror image of an old artist, 'grandaddy Benton' as all the kids call me. I had a belly when I did it but after building a stone retaining wall, 65 feet long and in some places 10 feet high, on our place in Martha's Vinyard, I got rid of it. It hasn't come back.
Image measures 19.5 x 13.75, sheet is 24 x 18, with a framed size of 28 x 22.5 inches.
Very good condition as shown here outside the frame and mat, the full untrimmed sheet with deckle edges, not laid down, no damage, puncture or repair. There are three narrow areas of tape residue extreme upper edge and a thin, faint outline of toning from a previous mat that frames the image.
