MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985) PENCIL SIGNED COLORED ETCHING

50: MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985) PENCIL SIGNED COLORED ETCHING

Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
David and Bathsheba (1956)
The etching heightened with watercolors by hand on Arches watermarked paper, is signed by Chagall in pencil lower right and numbered 57 from the edition of only 100 prints lower left.

Hand signed and hand colored etchings by Marc Chagall are rare. This interpretation of the story of David and Bathsheba is from the artist's monumental series to illustrate the Bible, undertaken beginning in 1931. Like Dali with his series The Divine Comedy, this project, originally initiated by art dealer Ambroise Vollard and ultimately published by Chagall's good friend Tériade, consumed decades of Chagall's output. His interpretations of biblical tales for La Bible are charmingly imbued with his own unique emotions and thoughts.
Image measures 11 x 10 on a 20 x 14.5 inch sheet with an overall framed size of 23.5 x 17.5 inches.
Good to very good condition as shown here outside the framing, the print remains adhered to the mat along the top edge, the image is framed by heavy mat burn toning, there are no tears, damage or repair, not laid down, apparently the full sheet.
