JOYCE GROWING THUNDER FOGARTY (B. 1950) BEADED PIPE BAG

2: JOYCE GROWING THUNDER FOGARTY (B. 1950) BEADED PIPE BAG

A fine and rare example of contemporary bead and quill work by the Assiniboine Sioux artist Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty from Fort Peck Reservation in Montana. Smithsonian Magazine describes this artist as one of the West's most highly regarded beadworkers. Elizabeth Kirsch of the Kansas City Star said the following about this bag in an October 14, 1999 exhibition review, 'A beautiful pipe bag that also incorporates perfect work using porcupine quills....'

The outstanding execution of this piece and the resulting crispness of detail with exuberance achieved through skillful beadwork are both hallmarks of Joyce Growing Thunder's work, which is easily described as perfect.

This pipe bag was first purchased by Santa Fe dealer Greg Stock at what is purported to be the artist's very first public showing at the Santa Fe Indian Market, where she has since won Best in Show three times.

According to AskArt.com, 'Growing Thunder Fogarty's work can be found in permanent museum collections including, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ralph T. Coe Foundation, Fenimore Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and more.'
