2: JOYCE GROWING THUNDER FOGARTY (B. 1950) BEADED PIPE BAG

A fine and rare example of contemporary bead and quill work by the Assiniboine Sioux artist Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty from Fort Peck Reservation in Montana. Smithsonian Magazine describes this artist as one of the West's most highly regarded beadworkers. Elizabeth Kirsch of the Kansas City Star said the following about this bag in an October 14, 1999 exhibition review, 'A beautiful pipe bag that also incorporates perfect work using porcupine quills....'

The outstanding execution of this piece and the resulting crispness of detail with exuberance achieved through skillful beadwork are both hallmarks of Joyce Growing Thunder's work, which is easily described as perfect.

This pipe bag was first purchased by Santa Fe dealer Greg Stock at what is purported to be the artist's very first public showing at the Santa Fe Indian Market, where she has since won Best in Show three times.

Provenance: The 40 year collection of Father Tom Wiederholt, Kansas City, Missouri. Tom was a close personal friend of scholar and curator Ralph 'Ted' Coe who advised Tom on most of his acquisitions.
