6: A MIDDLE MISSISSIPPIAN PERIOD EFFIGY POT ATTR CAHOKIA

The midwestern Cahokia culture hooded vessel shaded from red to grey-black is in the form of an effigy animal figure with small upright ears, slightly slanted protruding eyes, small nostriled nose, and a long slit mouth over the hollow body of tempered clay that has been pebble polished. The vessel is open on the back and has two upturned front legs as handles. A certificate of scientific testing from Artemis Laboratories accompanies this piece dating the last firing to the Mississippian Period approximately 700 years ago.
Measures 7.25 x 6.5 x 6 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs.
Provenance: The 40 year collection of Father Tom Wiederholt, Kansas City, Missouri. Tom was a close personal friend of scholar and curator Ralph 'Ted' Coe who advised Tom on most of his acquisitions.
