AN ELABORATE 19TH C. MICMAC QUILLED BIRCH BARK BOX

20: AN ELABORATE 19TH C. MICMAC QUILLED BIRCH BARK BOX

The large birch bark box is encircled with three horizontal bands wrapped in spruce root twining interspersed with imbricate decorations, the top is completely decorated in quill work displaying the warm subtle colors derived from natural dye sources resulting in the attractive color and patina found only with early 19th century pieces.
Measures 4.5 x 825 x 8.25 inches.
The condition is typical of these early pieces with heavy wear and losses as shown, the base of the box is separated from the side wall in places.
Provenance: The 40 year collection of Father Tom Wiederholt, Kansas City, Missouri. Tom was a close personal friend of scholar and curator Ralph 'Ted' Coe who advised Tom on most of his acquisitions.
