The double portrait of John and Thomas Young with flowers in a wicker basket is signed P M lower left, the artist's monogram signature, and displayed in a fine period frame, most likely the original.

Philipe Mercier was court portraitist whose paintings of prominent sitters are held in the Royal Portrait Gallery in London, the Tate Gallery and Leeds Museum.
Canvas measures 36 x 42.25 with a framed size of 44.5 x 50.5 inches.
Very good condition, professionally restored. Scattered minor touches of inpainting equaling less than five percent of the overall image area. There are no issues of repair, scratches, chips, cupping or losses. This work has been professionally wax lined on new stretchers. This work was restored by Jack Key Flanagan (1920-1998) of Houston, Texas in 1965.
Provenance: A two generation collection originating in Texas and descending to a Lawrence, Kansas family.
