255: 1935 WOOD SCULPTURE BY A KANSAS ARTIST SIGNED REED

This sculpture is believed to have been purchased by Susan's parents in the 1930s, about the same time they purchased a painting (also in this auction) from Sandzen in Lindsborg. The artist here has not yet been definitively identified. The carver's skill level is high, The difficult aspects like hands, face, anatomy and posture are all well-executed. The color is expertly applied and the whittle marks throughout serve to complete the feel of a good carving by trained artist. The underside of the base is signed REED 35 the year 1935, depth of the Great Depression.
Measures 12 x 3.25 x 3.25 inches.
Very good condition. There are no major chips, cracks or breaks, and no repairs.
