A FINE 19TH C. WALSCHAERTS LOCOMOTIVE VALVE GEAR MODEL

38: A FINE 19TH C. WALSCHAERTS LOCOMOTIVE VALVE GEAR MODEL

The finely crafted precision cast iron and brass model of the Walschaerts Valve Gear demonstrates the attributes and function of that patented steam engine valve gear invented by Belgian railway mechanical engineer Egide Walschaerts in 1844. The design saw its first widespread application in Britain on a Single Fairlie 0-4-4T locomotive after being exhibited in Paris in 1878 and purchased by the Swindon Marlborough and Andover railway in 1883. It's first widespread application in North America was on the Mason Bogie type locomotive and by the early 20th century the Walschaerts valve gear was the most commonly used of its type, particularly on larger locomotives.

This large, handsome mechanical demonstration model is housed in a later wood carrying case as shown.
The machine measures 15.25 x 28.5 x 5.75 inches. The case measures 17 x 30 x 9 inches.
Very good original condition throughout, no damage, repair or wear.
