EMD STYLING DEPT 'CITY OF MIAMI' COLOR SCHEME PROPOSAL

26: EMD STYLING DEPT 'CITY OF MIAMI' COLOR SCHEME PROPOSAL

The City of Miami (Late 1930s.)
The City of Miami was inaugurated in December 1940 as a Chicago-Miami train jointly operated by Illinois Central and four other railroads. The entire train was painted yellow-orange and green with red pinstripes. This is apparently an early proposal for painting the E6 locomotive. The final scheme was actually much more radical as it featured a large wave in green with three yellow pinstripes and the name 'City of Miami' in yellow at the top of the green wave. The nose of the locomotive had a red kite-shaped diamond with the words 'Illinois Central' separating the diamond from the front of the wave.

This original early unsigned watercolor and gouache painting on tissue-like paper was produced by the styling department of Electro-Motive Division of General Motors for the Illinois Central Railroad. The work is accompanied by its original GM EMD label and is unsigned.
Image size 7.5 x 20, sheet measures 19.25 x 25.25 inches.
Good original condition, noting that the vellum-type paper is puckered and rippled.
Provenance: The Fred Roniger Estate Collection.
